From Miami Detective to Champion for Survivors
The retired detective who took down corrupt cops and drug cartels now uses those same investigative skills to fight for sexual abuse survivors at The Alvarez Law Firm.
Every chapter of Alex's career has been defined by one mission: holding those who harm others accountable.
Born in Cuba and arriving in America as an infant, Alex applied to and was accepted by the Police Academy at just 19 years old. His decision to forgo college and pursue law enforcement initially surprised his family, though everyone soon realized the choice wasn't half-hearted.
One of the youngest members of the Miami-Dade Police Department, Alex quickly rose through the ranks from beat cop to detective and eventually started working with the Homicide Bureau during the height of the Miami Drug War.
At just 26, Alex was the lead detective on the infamous "Miami River Cops" case, resulting in the convictions of 18 corrupt officers. Newspapers reported the case marked "the end of the most violent and vicious era in the history of Miami."
Alex received more than 30 official commendations for his leadership, including the prestigious "Officer of the Year" award from the Miami-Dade Police Department.
While continuing to work as a detective, Alex attended St. Thomas University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. In 1992, he earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Miami.
Having earned his law degree, Alex retired from the police force and set out to make his mark as a plaintiff's attorney, quickly establishing himself as an aggressive and talented lawyer unafraid to take cases all the way to jury trial.
Alex founded The Alvarez Law Firm in Coral Gables, Florida, built on the principles of Integrity, Trust, and Results. A boutique firm dedicated to fighting for those who have been wronged.
Today, Alex Alvarez of The Alvarez Law Firm channels decades of investigative expertise and courtroom tenacity into one purpose: winning justice and accountability for survivors of sexual abuse and assault.
Alex Alvarez, Esq.
Founder, The Alvarez Law Firm
Born in Cuba, Alex arrived in America with his family as an infant. His first introduction to the American justice system came in 1978 when, at the age of 19, he applied to and was accepted by the Police Academy. His decision to forgo college and pursue a career in law enforcement initially surprised his family. Though everyone soon realized the choice wasn't half-hearted.
By the time Alex began working for the Miami-Dade Police Department as a beat cop, he was one of the youngest members of the force. He quickly rose through the ranks to become a detective and eventually started working with the Homicide Bureau.
The time period was the early to mid-1980s. It was the height of the Miami Drug War. The city was an illicit thoroughfare, then trafficking 70% of the country's cocaine and 90% of the quaaludes consumed in the United States. While TV shows like Miami Vice romanticized life as a police officer at the time, Alex's daily work was the unvarnished truth.

At 26, Alex was the lead detective on the infamous "Miami River Cops" case, which resulted in the convictions of 18 corrupt officers. The case garnered national attention and became known as one of the watershed moments that turned the tide against the wave of crime and drugs in South Florida. That year, Alex received more than 30 official commendations for his leadership, including the "Officer of the Year" award from the Miami-Dade PD in 1987.
To this day, Alex's work in law enforcement remains the subject of various TV shows and films, including the 2021 Netflix documentary "Cocaine Cowboys," which features interviews with him discussing his days in the real Miami Vice.
Beyond the societal impact of the Miami River Cops case, it also marked a personal milestone for Alex. As lead detective, he had to spend most of his working days in Miami courtrooms for those criminal trials. Sitting at the prosecutor's table, watching these trials unfold, Alex witnessed firsthand another facet of the American justice system -- how to hold someone accountable when they victimize, wrong, hurt, or harm another person. It was this experience that inspired Alex to become a trial attorney.

The instincts that dismantled corrupt police networks and drug operations now serve a deeply personal purpose.
Throughout his career in law enforcement, Alex saw what happens when people in positions of power abuse the trust placed in them. He saw how institutions protect their own while victims are silenced. He saw how corruption festers when no one is willing to investigate, to dig deeper, to hold the powerful accountable.
That is exactly why fighting for sexual abuse survivors isn't just another practice area for Alex -- it is the natural evolution of a lifetime spent pursuing justice. The same detective who meticulously built the case against 18 corrupt officers now meticulously builds cases against abusers and the institutions that enable them.
"He investigated criminals for a living. Now he investigates abusers -- and he brings the same relentless determination to every case."
Sexual abuse survivors deserve an advocate who knows how predators operate, how institutions cover up wrongdoing, and how to uncover the truth no matter how deeply it has been buried. That is the detective advantage Alex brings to every case at The Alvarez Law Firm.
Years of detective work trained Alex to see what others miss -- inconsistencies in stories, hidden evidence, institutional cover-ups. These skills are devastating against abusers and their enablers.
Alex took on corrupt officers within his own department when others would not. That same fearlessness now means he will never back down from powerful institutions, no matter their resources or reputation.
Having witnessed the devastating toll that abuse of power takes on victims throughout his career, Alex treats every survivor with the dignity, belief, and respect they deserve. You are believed here.
